TIL about the migration API.
This would be amazing for doing the first time import on a competitor's platform too. Nothing says you have to feed the downloaded archive into a GHES target.

They got tired of manually exporting data for GDPR requests? It took them a while...

They opened with this [in 2018 and updated in 2021]:
> Your trust is our first priority. That’s why we’re making it easy to get all of the data connected to your profile, whenever you need it. Now you can better understand what information we store, so you can make informed choices about how you use GitHub.
Having not the best personal history/response, I get the feeling there was some auditable event that we'd want to see; they're making the bet that folks won't. Corporate moves in particular rarely serve just one purpose. Make the data available for whatever reason, dress it up in PR; sure. Also drop responsibility.
It's probably interesting to revisit with all of these Copilots floating around.
Ultimately, to your point, GDPR wouldn't be notable. I'm skeptical because they're speaking: if this truly was the first priority... the announcement wouldn't exist.

    > The archive will contain your profile data, plan, and any email addresses connected with your account in addition to the issues, pull requests, comments, reviews, releases, projects, events, attachments, milestones, and settings for each of your repositories—along with basic information about the users who have interacted with them.
> Now you can better understand what information we store, so you can make informed choices about how you use GitHub.
> Download all of your data
Lies, there is no search query or visit logs in exported data, I do not believe that you aren't storing it, so compared to GDPR request this is useless.
